It fit with the Aristotle's definition of a "tragic hero" like the William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Because both protagonist has tragic flaws, Hamlet is his inability to act while Okonkwo was the fear of weakness and failure, which will ultimately bring to their fall. One statement of Things Fall Apart states "afraid of being weak" shows Okonkwo has a flaw that lead him to impulsive decisions.
