Even after general lee made an attempt to destroy Grant's troops while retreating, He managed to create elaborate strategies to make successful escape.

Union forces operating in the west were very successful in achieving their goals because they managed to keep oppression to a high for a longer period of time. The western south would include states such as alabama and mississippi, which are still in this day and age, behind in civil rights.
