They would most likely want the Freedmen to stay on because the Southern economy was heavily reliant on labor intensive agriculture.

Southern Economy pre-Civil War

Heavily reliant on cash crops which were then sold to manufacturing regions in the North and Europe.
These cash crops required a lot of cheap labor to be profitable.
