They have similar characteristics and structures because they are both reptiles and came from a common ancestor. That meant that, going back in time, both of these creatures were once one common, ancestral animal. Once the animals were put into different environments, they changed and evolved overtime in order to adapt to the challenges in the habitat specific to them. But, because they come from a common ancestor, they started from the same ‘base’, and will still share similarities today.
