James Garfield was the Rosecrans's chief of staff who later became a president of the United States. James A. Garfield served as chief of staff under Major General William S. Rosecrans, the commander of the Army of the Cumberland. Garfield resigned in December 1863 from the Army to take his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
